Assessment Process

I provide an assessment service to adults who wish to discover if they are autistic. I aim to provide a safe, affirming, and thorough assessment experience, and have an open referral system, so anyone can refer themselves directly.  Assessment is in-person, at the Women’s Organisation, 54 Saint James Street, Liverpool.

Initial Contact

Upon getting in touch, you will be offered an initial telephone conversation, free of charge, to briefly explore if an assessment for autism seems like it will meet your needs. If there is any indication that another service seems more suitable, this will be signposted. However, if full assessment looks advisable, we can talk about the assessment process more fully, and you can decide if you would like to book in.

Selected questionnaire measures may be useful, and if this is the case for you, they may be sent out prior to our first appointment.

Appointment 1 (approx. 2 hours)

In assessing for autism, it is important to understand your childhood developmental history. For this reason, you will be asked if someone you knew well in childhood (ideally a parent) to attend the appointment with you, to give this information. I understand that this is not always possible, and will discuss alternative routes with you if this is the case.

Appointment 2 (approx. 90 minutes)

The second appointment will focus more on your current experiences and explore your style of social communication and interaction.

At the end of the second appointment, I may have enough information to make a diagnosis of autism or to determine that you do not meet criteria for a diagnosis. Alternatively, I may need to offer a further assessment session to gather some more information.

Once a conclusion has been reached and discussed with you, a full diagnostic report will be provided within 21 days.

Follow up

If you are diagnosed as autistic, you will be offered a post-diagnostic follow up appointment approximately 2 weeks after receiving your report. This will be an opportunity to talk about how you are doing, how you feeling about your diagnosis, and provides a space to ask any questions that might have arisen.
